About Us

School Vision and Mission

Amelia Earhart School is committed to educational excellence aligned with the philosophy of the Alameda Unified School District. The Earhart community believes that every one of our students can achieve academic and social success. The staff strongly believes in a positive learning environment that is respectful of individual student abilities, needs and differences.

School Profile

Amelia Earhart School proudly stands on Bay Farm Island in Alameda. Alameda is a unique city in the San Francisco Bay that is comprised of a main island and a peninsula. Our community, Bay Farm, is on the peninsula. Bay Farm was once an agricultural community that became the site of a planned community development about 30 years ago. Earhart school was built in 1979 to accommodate the burgeoning school population resulting from the development of Bay Farm. The school has grown from 300 students in 1979 to nearly students today. The community boasts an elaborate system of bike and walking trails, many of which are adjacent to lagoons and the beautiful San Francisco Bay. Parks, organized ball fields, community centers and a public library add to the small-town atmosphere and closeness of our community. Located on the east side of the Bay, near Oakland International Airport, we are reminded of our namesake and the tradition of setting and achieving high standards. We experience both the challenges and advantages of a suburban school operating in an urban school district.

Earhart is the largest elementary school in Alameda. Our student body is ethnically diverse with a balance of Asian and Caucasian children representing 86% of our students. Eight other ethnic groups are represented in smaller numbers.   One hundred forty(26%) of our students are English language learners (ELL) representing 17 different “first” languages. Most students, including our ELL students, are middle class with college-educated parents.

Our school boasts a well educated and highly trained staff that works collaboratively and utilizes best practices. 100% of our classroom teachers are fully credentialed and have earned CLAD certification. Earhart is a school where teachers and families want to be. The success of all our students is the goal of the Earhart community, and the extent to which our staff, parents, community members, and students strive to achieve that success is inspiring. Enhancing our traditional program with extended learning opportunities in science and arts is a commitment of our staff and PTA. Our curricular and enrichment programs provide a strong academic foundation, as well as learning opportunities that promote social and emotional development. To that end, the PTA partners with our principal and staff to provide a program offering a myriad of enrichment opportunities such as Art Docent, Classroom standards based art instruction, K-5 music, Noon Tunes, Noon Leagues, gardening, hands-on science and valuable field-study opportunities. These enrichment activities are integral to the development of our children as lifelong learners.

The spirit of volunteerism that our parents, extended family and community members embrace defines our school culture and enhances our commitment to excellence. Our after-school enrichment program, organized by parents and funded by our PTA and the Alameda Education Foundation (AEF), offers courses that address the needs of the whole child, while gently focusing on academics.    As a community, we have recently completed three extensive projects: a state-of-the-art computer lab, a science lab, and a safer, more functional parking lot. This year the community is looking at the physical environment and working on an “Outdoor Improvement Plan” that will be implemented during the 2007-08 year. These combined efforts achieve our mission to provide educational excellence and a positive, safe learning environment for all of our students.

It is the shared belief of the Earhart community that a lifelong love of learning is the best legacy a school can give its students. During Amelia Earhart’s lifetime, she faced the risk of flying with incredible courage. Our children are empowered to use their courage to soar to excellence each day!
